José Santiago Garnelo y Alda (1866-1944) was a prominent Spanish painter known for his historical and religious works. Born in Enguera, Valencia, he exhibited artistic talent early on, leading to formal studies at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos in Valencia and later at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Garnelo's artistic development was heavily influenced by Spanish masters like Diego Velázquez and Francisco Goya, as well as his studies in Rome, where he immersed himself in Renaissance and Baroque art. Garnelo's career was marked by significant achievements, including his renowned painting "La rendición de Granada" (The Surrender of Granada) in 1892, which captured the dramatic historical event with meticulous detail. He also excelled in religious art, exemplified by "El Milagro de San Antonio" (The Miracle of St. Anthony), showcasing his skillful use of light and shadow. In addition to his painting career, Garnelo was a respected educator, serving as a professor at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and later as the director of the Museo del Prado. His dedication to classical traditions and his contributions to art education left a lasting legacy in Spanish art. Garnelo passed away in 1944, but his work continues to be celebrated for its technical mastery and emotional depth.
